Chris Gayle, the legendary cricketer for West Indies and Royal Challengers Bangalore, was joking on commentary about making a return to cricket after Virat Kohli broke his record for most hundreds in the IPL. The Indian batting superstar scored his seventh ton in the tournament history, surpassing his former RCB teammate, who has six centuries under his belt.
During the mid-innings break, Chris Gayle, working as the expert analyst for the IPL on JioCinema, was quoted as saying, “Never doubt Virat Kohli. Fantastic innings, well played, you know, he has put his team in a winning position.”
Then, the 43-year-old Jamaican cracked a joke about coming out of retirement to presumably take back his record for most centuries in the IPL, which had been broken earlier by Virat Kohli, one of his best friends on and off the field. Gayle said, “Virat and Faf batted really well, but it was all about Virat Kohli... Fantastic innings by Virat, he has passed the Universe Boss. I am coming back out of retirement and I will see you next year, Virat.”
For the unversed, on May 21 (Sunday), at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, RCB opener notched up his second hundred in back-to-back IPL matches, this time against GT, to help his side put up a very good total of 197/5 on the board. Unfortunately for Virat Kohli, his exploits with the bat weren’t enough as Gujarat Titans managed to chase down the runs with six wickets in hand to end the IPL 2023 campaign for Royal Challengers Bangalore. Shubman Gill was the star of the show for the Titans with the bat as he smashed his second ton in the tournament.
