Virender Sehwag, the former ODI World Cup winner for India, is hopeful that his former teammate Virat Kohli brings home the coveted title for the second time in his international career. In an exclusive interview, the 44-year-old also wanted to see the Indian batting superstar get carried on the shoulders after securing the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 trophy, similarly to what he did for Sachin Tendulkar in 2011.
Known as one of the greatest batters to grace the ODIs, Virat Kohli has more than 13,000 runs in the format, including a mind-blowing 47 centuries in just 269 innings. The Delhi-born cricketer is just two centuries away from equalling the all time record of ODI centuries set by the Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar, who achieved his feat in 452 innings.
In his exclusive interview with Cricbuzz, Virender Sehwag talked about how he hoped to see Virat Kohli get many hundreds in the ODI World Cup 2023, becoming the leading run scorer of the tournament in the process. He was quoted as saying, as per Sportskeeda, “Cheeku (Virat Kohli) didn’t score a single century in the 2019 World Cup, this year I hope he scores many hundreds and ends up as the leading run-scorer in the tournament. Then, I want him to be carried on the shoulders and get a round of the ground.”
The 44-year-old also spoke about how the two senior players in the Indian cricket team, namely the captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli deserve to win the ODI World Cup 2023. He said, “These two (Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli) senior players deserve to win the World Cup. Rohit Sharma was so close to getting picked for the 2011 World Cup but missed out. Later he became the Badshah of ODIs, he deserves to win a World Cup trophy because he is a fantastic player.”
