Former cricketer Dinesh Karthik has left MS Dhoni behind to score most runs in T20 cricket by an Indian wicketkeeper. Karthik, who retired from all forms of Indian cricket in 2024, was recently seen playing for Paarl Royals in the latest edition of the SA20 League in 2025. Despite not having a great season with the bat, Karthik surpassed Dhoni to become the Indian wicketkeeper-batter with most runs in T20 cricket.

Dinesh Karthik now has 7537 runs to his name in his T20 career while MS Dhoni has scored 7432 runs in the shorter format so far and will also be seen playing for Chennai Super Kings in the upcoming season of IPL. Speaking on his record, Karthik added that he was never fascinated by the records and always focused on playing for his team.

“I played a lot of my cricket wanting to play for India," Karthik was quoted as saying by News18. “And when I retired from IPL and playing in India six months ago, I think that was the most important thing — to play for the country and do well. I’ve never been someone who’s very fascinated by records, probably because I don’t have great records,” he added.

It won’t be a matter of time before Dhoni overtakes me back: Dinesh Karthik

Speaking further, Dinesh Karthik also said that it won’t take much time for MS Dhoni to overtake him and become the Indian wicketkeeper with runs in T20 cricket again. Dhoni is set to make his return on the cricket field in IPL 2025.

“I don’t know, but you know, it is great to know that I overtook Dhoni, but it won’t be a matter of time before he overtakes me back. And it really wouldn’t trouble me much. I’m happy for him to keep that record as the highest whatever, run-scorer as a wicketkeeper. I don’t know what it is, but it is — I didn’t even know this till you (the reporter who asked him) told me, honestly, it’s okay. It’s nice to know, but it’s not something that I crave or really want," Karthik said.
