Ahead of the second encounter, the youngster addressed the press and said that his mindset had always been to take charge when the leg spinner was bowling as the team needed ten runs per over in that situation. The 21-year-old was quoted by ICC as, "My mindset was like, in that situation, the leg spinner was bowling, so I want to take charge because we want 10 per over in that situation.”

Varma added, “At that time, my mindset was clear. If the leg spinner is bowling, I'll go after him. So for fast bowlers, settled batter and captain Surya bhai was batting. I was confident that he could finish against the fast bowlers. So especially that over I want to charge the leg spinner. My mindset is simple. As I said before, I have got a role in the team. So I just want to stick to that role and I'll be clear with my mindset."

In the first match of the series, India successfully chased the 209-run target set by their rivals. While the Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav played the top-scoring knock for his side, 80 off 42, Ishan Kishan scored 58 off 39 runs to help his side chase down the target and move past the finishing line.
