Steven Gerrard, the former Liverpool and England captain, has been out of work since he was sacked by Aston Villa in October 2023, after winning only 13 games out of 40 during his 11-month stint with the club. Gerrard was rumored to take up a lucrative offer in Saudi Arabia but the former Liverpool midfielder has confirmed that he will not be accepting any offers to manage in the Saudi Pro League at the moment.
The 43-year-old was reportedly approached by Al-Ettifaq, a Saudi Pro League side that finished seventh in the 2022-23 season and was invited to Saudi Arabia earlier this month to discuss a potential deal, but he has decided to turn it down after looking at it for some time.
"I was invited over there to look at a potential offer, which I did," Gerrard said on Channel 4 before England's Euro 2024 Qualifier against North Macedonia. He continued, "I have been analyzing that over the last couple of days. But, as we stand right now, I won't be taking that offer up."
After ending his playing career in 2016, Gerrard started his managerial career with Rangers in 2018 and led them to their first Scottish Premiership title in a decade in 2021. He then moved to the Premier League with Aston Villa in November 2021 but failed to impress.
The Saudi Pro League has attracted some big names in recent months, such as Ballon d'Or winner Karim Benzema, who joined champions Al-Ittihad from Real Madrid, and Portugal legend Cristiano Ronaldo, who signed for Al Nassr from Manchester United.
