On December 28, 1983, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar scored his 30th Test century to break the long-standing record set by Sir Don Bradman. He surpassed the Australian legend to become a record holder for most centuries in the format. His knock came against the West Indies in Chennai during the sixth Test of the series. The game began on December 24, and came to an end on December 29 with an end, and is still fresh among fans for Gavaskar’s heroics. During the game, the Little Master scored an unbeaten 236 off 425 balls.
His knock was powered by Ravi Shastri and Syed Kirmani’s fifties, with India declaring their first innings at 451 for 8. West Indies were bowled out for 313 and in the second innings, the Carribeans were 64 for 1 when the match ended in a draw. While the West Indies pocketed the six-match series ended with 3-0 in favour of West Indies, Sunil Gavaskar ended as the leading run-scorer with 505 runs with the best of 236*.
Sunil Gavaskar breaks Sir Don Bradman’s record of most Test centuries
The series proved to be a special one for the Little Master as both his centuries etched the cricketer’s name into the record books. In the first match played in New Delhi, Gavaskar equalled the record of 29 centuries by Bradman. Another player who stood out in the game was Dillip Vengsarkar, who came up with a knock of 159 runs.
The series saw India captain Kapil Dev was named joint Man of the Series with Malcolm Marshall. Currently, Sachin Tendulkar is on the top of the list for most centuries in Tests with 51 hundreds. His record is followed by Jacques Kallis with 45, Ricky Ponting with 41, Kumar Sangakkara and Rahul Dravid having 38 and 36 hundreds, respectively. The former Indian captain is on the ninth spot on the standing with 34 centuries in the longest format.
