After facing an unexpected defeat in the first upset of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, England locked horns with South Africa, who were coming off another upset of the season on October 21. It was at the jam-packed iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai that both sides clashed with an intent to make up for their last defeats. The match saw England all-rounder Ben Stokes playing his first match of the tournament after missing first three games with injury.

On the Proteas side Reeza Hendricks came in as the substitute of skipper Temba Bavuma, who was benched out due to bad health. Aiden Markram stepped in and held team's helm in the absence of their skipper. Speaking of the toss war, English skipper Jos Buttler won the toss and invited their opponents to bat first.

After Quinton De Kock's unexpected dismissal in the first over, the South Africa batting unit stood up in unity and put up a mammoth total of 399 runs. Heinrich Klaasen hit another century and remained his side's top scorer followed by Reeza Hendricks' 75-baller 85.

South Africa continued their terrific performance in the second innings as well as they went on to dismiss English batters in quick succession. By the 17th over, the 2019 champions had lost eight wickets. Gus Atkinson and Mark Wood's 43* off 17 gave some hope to them. However, the hopes shattered soon as the final batter came down quick. With this, South Africa registered a big win by 229 runs over England.
