The International Cricket Council (ICC) has stated its willingness to take cricket to the Youth Olympics in 2030 in collaboration with the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The statement from the ICC in this regard came after the declaration from the Indian Government last year to bid for the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) 2030, along with the Olympic Games 2036.
The report from Cricbuzz spoke about an email exchange between Vivek Gopalan and William Glenwright, the General Manager of Development at the ICC. After Gopalan proposed the idea about cricket and Youth Olympics to Glenwright, the latter responded, “It's a good idea and something we could look at.”
In one of his emails to William Glenwright, Vivek Gopalan said, “There is a strong desire for cricket at Youth Olympic Games (YOG) with Mumbai bidding to host 2030 YOG.” He also stated to the ICC official, “No less a person than Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has now publicly proclaimed India's desire to host both the 2030 YOG and 2036 Olympics.”
Some of the key stakeholders were also the recipients of this email conversation, including names like Geoff Allardice, Wasim Khan, Claire Furlong, and Chris Tetley.
During the 141st IOC session held last year in Mumbai, Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, alluded to the nation’s involvement in the Youth Olympic Games. But recently, during his speech from the Red Fort on India’s 78th Independence Day, he reiterated the country’s commitment to bidding for the Olympic Games 2036.
Moreover, cricket is set to make its return to the Olympics at the LA 2028 after making its first and only appearance at the games in Paris in 1900.
