On Friday, August 2, during the first ODI of the three-match series, the captain of India, Rohit Sharma, made a funny remark about the Sri Lankan batters at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. The 37-year-old spoke about how the batting lineup of Sri Lanka aren’t adept at hitting down the ground, instead peppering the mid-wicket region in his hilarious ways.
The comical moment happened in the 20th over of the Sri Lankan innings when Kuldeep Yadav was set to deliver the bowl to the captain of the opposition, Charith Asalanka. At this stage of the match, Sri Lanka were struggling at 67/3 with Pathum Nissanka at the crease on 38 off 59, while his captain was new to the crease.
Rohit Sharma’s funny remark on Sri Lankan batters in 1st ODI; goes viral
While standing at the slip, Rohit Sharma remarked to Kuldeep Yadav along with hand gestures, “Idhar marte hi nahi hai ye log, udhar hi marenge aada. Dhyan mein rakhna (These people [Sri Lankan batters] don’t hit there [down the ground], they are going to hit across the line [towards mid-wicket region]. Keep that in mind).”
Notably, in his first 50-overs match as captain after the ODI World Cup 2023 final, Rohit Sharma lost the toss to Charith Asalanka, the Sri Lankan captain, who decided to bat first in good conditions. The Indians started exceptionally well in the first powerplay of 10 overs with their fast bowlers, and their good work was continued by the spin bowlers in the second powerplay of 11-40 overs.
As of this writing, Sri Lanka are 165/6 in 40 overs against India with Dunith Wellalage and Wanindu Hasranga trying to put them in a good position with a steady partnership.
