World number one ranked tennis sensation, Iga Swiatek of Poland on Friday, September 20 confirmed her withdrawal from the upcoming China Open 2024. Swiatek, who recently withdrew from the Korea Open in Seoul, citing fatigue, has pulled out of the upcoming event in Beijing due to personal reasons.
Swiatek, who would have entered the tournament as the defending champion after she defeated Russia’s Liusmila Samsonova in straight sets in the final last year, will miss the tournament, which is set to begin from September 25 with the final scheduled to be played on October 6.

However, the exact reason behind the Polish international’s withdrawal is not known, she has cited “personal matters”. “Due to personal matters, I’m forced to withdraw from the China Open in Beijing. I’m very sorry as I had an amazing time playing and winning this tournament last year and was really looking forward to being back there,” Swiatek said.
“I’m sorry I won’t be a part of it this time,” she further added. While this is 23-year-old Polish international’s third withdrawal in the year. With Iga Swiatek missing out the tournament, reigning Australian Open and US Open champion, Aryna Sabalenka will enter the tournament as the top seeded.
Apart from Sabalenka, the other seeded players include Jessica Pegula, 2023 semifinalists, Coco Gauff and Elena Rybakina. Earlier, Maria Sakkari also withdrew from the China Open due to a shoulder injury, Dannielle Collins also joined the list with a reported illness.
