On Friday, September 20, the Indian cricket team dominated play on day two of the first Test match against Bangladesh, taking a massive lead of 308 runs at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. After registering a first innings score of 376 runs in the first session, India bundled out Bangladesh for a paltry 149, and then, in their second innings, they were 81/3 with Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant at the crease at the close of play on day two.

For the unversed, India had started play on day two with their first innings score on 339/6, and in the first hour, Bangladesh picked up four wickets, to bring their innings to a close on 376 runs. Hasan Mahmud registered figures of 5/83 in 22.2 overs, while Taskin Ahmed, his opening bowling partner, took three wickets for 55 runs in 21 overs, while the other two wickets went to Nahid Rana and Mehidy Hasan Miraz.

India bundled out Bangladesh for paltry 149 in first innings

In their first innings with the bat, Bangladesh batted very poorly, getting bundled out for just 149 runs in 47.1 overs with Litton Das (32 off 64) top scoring. For India, Jasprit Bumrah was the chief destroyer with the ball, picking up a four-wicket haul in just 11 overs, while the likes of Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep, and Ravindra Jadeja taking two wickets each, but at the same time, local boy Ravichandran Ashwin went wicketless.

With a massive first innings lead of 227 runs, Rohit Sharma, the captain of India, decided that they will not be enforcing the follow-on against Bangladesh. It led to the Indian batting lineup losing a couple of early wickets of Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal before Virat Kohli lost his wicket in bizarre circumstances, not opting to use the DRS when he had gotten an inside edge on an lbw decision given against him by the on-field umpire Richard Kettleborough off the bowling of Mehidy Hasan Miraz.

After that, Shubman Gill (33 off 64) and Rishabh Pant (12 off 13) were unbeaten at the close of play on day two, with the Indian second innings score reading 81/3. On day three, India will be looking to post a target in excess of 450 runs for Bangladesh to chase down in more than two days, giving them more than enough time to bundle out the visitors a second time around.
