On Sunda y, October 20, New Zealand defeated India by eight wickets in the first Test of the three-match series at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. New Zealand chased the 107-run target in 27.4 overs at the loss of two wickets to wind up the match in the first session of the first Test. 

Notably, after winning the toss, the Indian captain, Rohit Sharma decided to bat first. This decision of Rohit Sharma did not pay dividends as the Indian side were bundled out for the score of 46, their lowest-ever in Tests at home. Afterwards, New Zealand put up a massive score of 402 in 91.3 overs with Rachin Ravindra scored a crucial 134 off 157 deliveries, along with crucial contributions from Devon Conway (91) and Tim Southee (65).

While Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja picked up three wickets each, Mohammed Siraj took two, with Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj picking up one wicket each. In return, India chased the 402-run target and put up 106-run lead, courtesy a 195-ball 150 from Sarfaraz Khan, 99 from Rishabh Pant and a crucial 70 off 102 balls from Virat Kohli. Matt Henry once again shone with the bat for the visitors, claiming three wickets, William ORourke also picked up three wickets. Ajaz Patel got two while Glenn Phillips and Tim Southee picked a wicket each.

In response to India’s 106-run lead, New Zealand chased the total in mere 27.4 overs with Will Young scoring a 76-ball 48 while Rachin Ravindra also got 39 runs to help the Kiwis take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Moreover, with this win, New Zealand also registered their first win in a Test match since 1988.
