Owners of the Indian Premier League franchises will reportedly meet the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) by the end of this month for the planning of the IPL 2025 mega auction. As per the reports by Cricbuzz, the meeting is likely to take place on July 30 or 31, and the national cricket governing body has asked the team owners to be available for the same. While the date of the meeting has not been confirmed yet, it is expected to take place at the BCCI office in Mumbai.
As per the report, the main agenda of the meeting will be player retention. There have been different views and opinions on the number of retentions a franchise is allowed to make. Some have argued that as many franchises have existed for over 17 years, a maximum of eight retentions should be allowed. The franchises have opined that they need to structure their team around a few names who play a key role in fan engagement and brand building.
On the other hand, other franchises have argued that the number of retentions should be minimal. Not only this but there has also been a debate about whether the Right to Match (RTM) option should be available at the mega auction. Apart from that, players’ salary cap will also be a topic of discussion during the forthcoming meeting.
The salary cap is expected to be around ₹120 crore in the first year of the next cycle. Earlier, the salary of the top retention was around 16-17 per cent of the salary cap. If the same method is followed, the salary of the top retention could be around more than ₹20 crore. In addition, the BCCI is also likely to explain the formula for determining the salaries of other retained players in the meeting.
