Indian Premier League franchises have reportedly made suggestions ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. The franchises have shared a few suggestions with IPL officials during feedback sessions on player retentions before the auction. The next steps will be discussed when officials meet the franchise owners in probably the last week of July.
A senior official at a franchise told ESPNcricinfo, that conducting a mega auction every five years instead of the present three-year cycle would be more beneficial. A longer gap would ensure that teams get more time to train and build continuity by developing young and uncapped Indian players. Franchises have invested in this and built academies to groom players to compete on the international level.
According to the official, a mega auction every five years would ensure that the franchises keep doing this for a longer term, whereas a three-year cycle is risky for a team to lose a player they have nurtured for a rival franchise. Not only this, but the official has also suggested that teams should be allowed to work directly with players to renegotiate salaries between mega-auctions. It would help teams to not just retain key players but also help them reach better teams.
Not only this, but a CEO at another franchise said teams should be allowed to retain one big name or the captain while the remaining players could be through RTMs. This approach would allow other teams to determine a player’s price and remove monetary disappointment a player may have. One franchise suggested that eight RTM options and no retentions should be made, receiving mixed reactions from other franchises.
