Ishan Kishan has been in the limelight after his continuous absence since his withdrawal from the South Africa Test series in December 2023. However, Team India Head Coach Rahul Dravid confirmed that Ishan continues to remain available ahead of the Afghanistan T20Is, his elongated absence took a U turn.
While the 25-year-old wicketkeeper-batter continues to be in a cusp of controversy for his unexpected absence, the Patna-born cricketer finally broke his silence. As reported by several media outlets, the wicketkeeper-batter was asked by a senior member of the Indian cricket team to play Ranji Trophy in order to make a comeback in the national team, but Ishan reportedly said he was “working on certain technical aspects” and is not ready to feature in red-ball cricket. However, he was seen training with Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya in Baroda, reports now reveal that he will make a competitive comeback in the DY Patil T20 tournament. Quoting a source close to Ishan Kishan, the Indian Express informed that Kishan will seek a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the board to participate in Corporate T20 tournament.
“He will be playing for Reserve Bank of India (RBI). He wants to earn his spot in India’s T20 World Cup squad with a good outing in IPL. It is a long road, but the hunger to play cricket is back, and he wants to play in all three formats,” the source said.
However, it is to be noted that Ishan Kishan might be in the limelight for the recent series of events, the BCCI has also informed Deepak Chahar and Shreyas Iyer to feature in Ranji Trophy matches and they continue to sideline it.
Non-participation will carry severe implications: Jay Sh ah
However, the ongoing Ishan Kishan fiasco has compelled the Indian cricket board to take severe steps. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah in his recent address also highlighted the importance to feature in domestic leagues. In his letter addressed to BCCI contracted players, Shah stated that missing domestic cricket could lead to “severe implications”.
“However, there is a trend that has started to emerge and is a cause for concern. Some players have begun prioritising the IPL over domestic cricket, a shift that was not anticipated. Domestic cricket has always been the foundation upon which Indian cricket stands, and it has never been undervalued in our vision for the sport,” Jay Shah said in his letter.
“It is essential to recognise that domestic cricket forms the backbone of Indian cricket and serves as feeder line to Team India. Our vision for Indian cricket has been clear from the outset - every cricketer aspiring to play for India must prove themselves in domestic cricket. Performance in domestic tournaments remains a critical yardstick for selection, and non-participation in domestic cricket will carry severe implications,” he further added.
