The highly anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT), a Test series between Australia and India, consisting of five matches, is set to be played at the turn of the year down under. Just a few months before the first Test at the Optus Stadium in Perth, Ricky Ponting predicted that Australia would win a “competitive series” against India 3-1.
Notably, in the last two BGT Test series, consisting of four matches, India got the better of Australia 2-1 in away conditions. The former Australian cricketer alluded to these results before stating that Australia will have a point to prove against India at home after going down twice in a row in 2018-19 and 2020-21.
During his latest appearance on the ICC Review show, Ricky Ponting shared his take on the upcoming BGT 2024-25. He said, “It’s going to be a competitive series and as I said I think Australia’s got a bit of a point to prove against India in Australia on the back of what’s happened the last the last two series here.”
I’m obviously going to tip Australia to win: Ricky Ponting
“We are back to five Tests as well, which is the other really important thing about this series. It’s only been four Tests the last couple of times. Five tests, I think everyone’s really excited by that and I don’t know if there’d be too many drawn games,” the former ODI World Cup winner seemed happy about Australia and India playing a five-match Test series for the first time in 33 years.
Ricky Ponting also went on to predict the result of the BGT 2024-25, remarking that it will be in favour of Australia 3-1, but India will have their moments. He said, “I’m obviously going to tip Australia to win and I’m never going to tip against Australia. There will be a draw somewhere and there will be some bad weather somewhere, so I’m going to say 3-1 to Australia.”
