NBA star Kevin Durant opened up on the consumption of marijuana in the basketball league and said that it is commonly consumed by players in the game. Durant made an appearance on CNBC’s Game Plan, a show that talks about the ever-changing landscape in the sporting industry. In the show, he spoke on marijuana’s utilization in the game and also recalled an incident where the NBA Commissioner Adam Silver smelled marijuana on him.
The debate around legalizing marijuana has spanned over the years, and people who are in favor of it have tried to spread awareness about it. Durant has invested in multiple ventures in cannabis and collaborated with many names. The Phoenix Suns forward also said that he convinced Silver to remove marijuana from the list of banned items.

At the sports business conference held in Los Angeles, he said, “Well, he smelled it when I walked in. So, I didn't really have to say much, you know what I'm saying? He kind of understood where this was going...It's the NBA, man... everybody does it, to be honest. It's like wine at this point. “
Durant added, “I actually called him and advocated for him to take marijuana off the banned substances list. I just felt like it was becoming a thing around the country, around the world. The stigma behind it wasn't as negative as it was before. It doesn't affect you in any negative way. … I just enjoy the plant, as simple as that.”
Notably, marijuana was on the league's list of substances of performance-enhancing drugs till 2021. However, in 2020, the league decided to not test for marijuana. However, as per the new Collective Bargaining Agreement, the NBA and the player’s Association decided to stop testing cannabis altogether.
