The great of the game Lionel Messi has been confirmed as his new club in Major League Soccer (MLS) Inter Miami’s captain. This move comes hours ahead of David Beckham’s co-owned club’s Leagues Cup match, which is scheduled for July 26 against Atlanta United.

Inter Miami head coach Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino confirmed this move during a pre-match press conference late on Monday. The head coach when asked if Messi will lead Inter Miami against United, he affirmed, “Yes, he was our captain in the last game as well. It is very likely that both Messi and Busi (Sergio Busquets) will play longer, even from the beginning.”
However, Martino further added that his presence on the field will be based on his fitness adding, “Everything will depend on how they feel. It’s just their second game.”
Messi shines on MLS debut
The Argentine was called in as a substitute on his Inter Miami debut which also had stars and some of the great of the games in attendance. Messi swept the football world with his left foot free kick winner against Cruz Azul to clinch the first match for Inter Miami in the Leagues Cup.
Inter Miami will next face Atlanta United on Wednesday in a potential knockout match and a point here will help Inter confirm their berth in the Leagues Cup Round of 32.
