In a major development, one of the greats of the game of football, Argentina’s Lionel Messi could return to India after 14 long years in 2025. Kerala’s Sports Minister, V Abdurahiman on Wednesday, November 10 revealed that Messi and his team could travel to India for an international match, scheduled for next year.
However, the exact date of travel and the match is not known yet, the Sports Minister while addressing a press conference in Thiruvananthapuram stated that the match could be conducted under the complete supervision of the state government.

V Abdurahiman revealed that the 2022 FIFA World Cup winners, Argentina will travel to India to play an international fixture in Kerala. “All the financial assitance for organising this high-profile football event will be provided by the merchants of the state,” the Kerala minister said. If these are proven right, it will be Messi’s second visit to the country after his first visit came in September 2011 when Argentina faced Venezuela in a FIFA friendly.
Speaking of the star footballer, the record eight-time Ballon d’Or winner is curently featuring in Argentina’s World Cup qualifiers. The 37-year-old last played in match against Peru where he equalled US legend Landon Donovan’s record for most assists. The 1-0 win of Argentina over Peru solidified their position in South America qualifying with 25 points from 12 matches.
