In less than ten minutes, all available tickets for Lionel Messi's debut away game with Inter Miami CF were gone. On August 6, the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner will take the field for Inter Miami against FC Dallas in the Leagues Cup Round of 16 at the Toyota Stadium.

The event sold out quickly, according to reports, with ticket prices rising to as much as $9000. According to Bloomberg, the ticket costs started at $299 and eventually rose to $699 in some markets. “We will sell out in a matter of minutes. It’s the greatest coup in the history of the league,”  stated FC Dallas co-owner Dan Hunt, on Tuesday.

Messi's match tickets are more expensive than Taylor Swift's on secondary markets. All tickets for the game on Sunday were listed on StubHub on Thursday afternoon for at least $700, with many going for well over $1,000. At one point, front-row seats in a good section were listed for $27,000 each. On StubHub, Swift concert tickets start at roughly $500 for the Saturday night performance in Inglewood, California.

Since transferring to the USA during the current transfer window, Messi has been on a tear. In his first game against Cruz Azul, he beat them with a free-kick in extra time. Many well-known celebrities, including David Beckham, Victoria Beckham, LeBron James, Kim Kardashian, and Serena Williams, were present. In his subsequent two appearances, against Atlanta United and Orlando City, he scored braces.

Each summer, MLS and LIGA MX teams take a break from their regular seasons to compete in the Leagues Cup. The competition includes all 29 MLS teams and 18 Liga MX teams. Three automatic berths into the CONCACAF Champions Cup are given to the top three teams. Since its inception in 2019, the Leagues Cup has not been won by an MLS team.
