Argentina star footballer Lisandro Martinez has undergone a ligament surgery successfully but his comeback time is still not revealed. During Manchester United’s clash against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford on February 2, the centre-back sustained an injury. The United lost the game by 0-2 margin. Ruben Amorin, the United’s head coach, spoke how serious the 27-year-old’s injury is and when can he rejoin the pack.
“Licha [Martínez] is really important for us, not just as a player, but as a character,” Amorim said, as reported by ESPN. "I think it’s a bad situation. Let’s wait and see with the doctor, but I think it is serious. We are going to see in the next days but I think it is a serious situation. He felt it and when you are a player, you know when it is something serious. We are here to help him in this difficult moment like he has helped us,” said Amorin last week.
As per the Daily Mail report, the United’s medical squad has said the Argentine would have to go through a surgery before the week’s end. Martinez had surgery in London and he was accompanied by some key officials of the English club.
Martinez may miss initial phase of 2025-26 season
Martinez might take six months to a year to completely recover from the injury which means he can miss the first-half of the 2025-26 season. Since 2022, injuries have impeded his career when he became a part of the United after serving Ajax from 2019 to 2022.
Previously, he sustained a right-knee injury and missed eight matches but didn’t go under the knife. In October 2023, he had the second foot operation to get his fractured bone fixed. He took action after the problem got worse. The 27-year-old has made 58 appearances for United and has scored three goals.
