On Wednesday, November 13, India recorded a 2-1 lead in the four-match T20I series against South Africa by defeating the hosts by a margin of 11 runs. The game saw Tilak Varma recording his maiden T20I century and playing a heroic knock of 107 runs along with Abhishek Sharma’s comeback knock of 50 runs. Batting first, the visitors posted 219 runs for six wickets. In return, Marco Jansen recorded a valiant knock of 54 runs off just 17 deliveries.

However, it didn’t prove to be enough as the hosts fell short of 11 runs and lost the game. On India’s side, Arshdeep Singh picked three wickets. Not only this, but a couple of records were also broken during the fixture. In this article, we will have a look at some of the records which were shattered as the T20 World Cup 2024 finalists locked horns.

1. Arshdeep Singh surpasses Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s wicket tally in T20Is

Arshdeep Singh surpassed Bhuvneshwar Kumar to become pacer with most wickets in T20I for India. Arshdeep recorded the feat in only 59 matches, whereas Kumar had taken 87 games to reach the 90-wicket mark. He holds 92 wickets to his name. Singh is now second overall in India’s all-time T20I wicket-takers list and trails only Yuzvendra Chahal. The leg-spinner has 96 wickets from 80 matches.

2. India’s highest T20I total in South Africa

The game also saw India recording the highest total in the shortest format in South Africa. The Men in Blue surpassed their previous record when they scored 218 runs against England in Durban during the T20 World Cup 2007 fixture. The game saw Yuvraj Singh hitting six sixes in an over.

3. Tilak Varma becomes second-youngest Indian to score a hundred

As Tilak Varma played a blistering knock of 107* runs from 56 deliveries, he became the youngest Indian to score a hundred in T20Is at the age of 22 years and five days. Yashasvi Jaiswal is the youngest Indian to score a hundred in T20Is with a century against Nepal at the age of 21 years and 279 days.

4. Marco Jansen’s fastest T20I fifty ever against India

During the game, Marco Jansen came up with a blistering fifty, recorded to be the fastest ever fifty against India in T20Is. He reached the 50-run mark in just 16 balls as he batted in at number 7 for his side. He overtook Australian Cameron Green’s 19-ball fifty which he recorded in Hyderabad against India in 2022.

5. India post eight 200-plus score in T20Is in a calendar year

As India crossed the 200-run mark to post a mammoth total of 219 runs, they registered their eighth 200-plus score in the shortest format this year. It is the highest by any team in a calendar year. They have now surpassed the previous record of seven 200+ plus scores set by Birmingham Bears in 2022, India in 2023 and Japan in 2024.
