Luis Suarez reunited with his former Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi as he signed a one-year deal with Inter Miami. The news became official when the Major League Soccer club announced it on Friday, December 22. The 36-year-old Uruguayan striker signed the contract until the end of the 2024 Major League Soccer season and reunited with his former Barcelona teammates Lionel Messi along with Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba.
Suarez left Gremio earlier this month, where he scored 29 goals in 54 games. The footballer had netted 198 times in 283 matches for Barcelona, after scoring 82 goals in 133 games for Liverpool between 2011 and 2014. On joining the club, Suarez said, "I'm very happy and excited to take on this new challenge with Inter Miami. I can't wait to get started, and I'm ready to work to make the dream of winning more titles with this great club a reality.”
Notably, Suarez, Neymar, and Messi were part of the famous Barca attacking trio. The club had dominated Spain and Europe in the 2014-15 season winning the La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Champions League. The managing owner of the club Jorge Mas said in a statement, “We are happy to welcome world-class striker Luis Suarez to our club.
He added, “Luis is a fierce competitor whose winning drive embodies what we want out of our players. We promised our fans we would pursue the world’s best players to build a squad that can compete at the highest echelons in the Americas.” Inter Miami are set to kick off the 2024 MLS campaign with a home game against Real Salt Lake on February 21.
