Virat Kohli, the Indian cricketing superstar, notched up a historic 50th ODI hundred against New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai during the CWC 2023 semi-final. The special moment brought him tons of praise from the cricketing fraternity and beyond, but none too unique than Sunil Gavaskar stating how he smashed the Sri Lankan legend Lasith Malinga to all corners of the ground in the past during Hindi commentary on Star Sports.
The Indian cricket team managed to defeat New Zealand by 70 runs, thanks mainly to the epic three-figure score from Virat Kohli, who was dismissed on 117 runs off 113 balls. It led to Shreyas Iyer bringing up his hundred in just over 60 balls, showcasing the best of his power-hitting blitz, and in defence of the massive total of 397 on the board, Mohammed Shami managed to pick up a 7-fer to squash any hopes of a comeback for the Blackcaps.
During his commentary stint on Star Sports Hindi for the ODI World Cup 2023, Sunil Gavaskar was at his jovial best after Virat Kohli scored the 50th ODI hundred. In appreciation of the former Indian captain, he said, “Malinga ko jis tarah se unhone pela tha (How he managed to smash Malinga with such disdain).”
