Manchester City hunted and banned two minors for mocking the death of former Manchester United icon Sir Bobby Charlton. The ex-Man United star passed away in the early hours of Saturday, October 21 at the age of 86, while the family announced later in the day that he “passed peacefully”. However, some City fans sang ‘offensive chants’ during half-time during their Premier League clash against Brighton.
The club launched an investigation and apologised for the fans’ offensive chants in response to the announcement of the former England international’s death. The club later reviewed the CCTV footage to identify those involved in the matter. City released a statement and said, “Manchester City can confirm that two minors have been identified in connection with the vile chanting heard at the Etihad Stadium during half-time of last weekend’s fixture against Brighton & Hove Albion.”
The statement, further read, “The individuals in question have subsequently been suspended from attending all home or away fixtures and their details have been shared with Greater Manchester Police who are investigating the matter. Following the conclusion of Greater Manchester Police’s ongoing investigation, the individuals will be subject to the club’s official sanctions and bans process.”
A day after the incident, the Club, via an official statement said, “Manchester City FC are extremely disappointed to have learned of reports of offensive chanting from a small number of individuals about Sir Bobby Charlton in some of the concourses of Etihad Stadium during half time of yesterday’s Premier League fixture against Brighton and Hove Albion.”
