It is now understood that Premier League club Manchester City is looking at Barcelona’s Pedri Gonzalez as their top target midfield signing for the upcoming summer transfer window. City have not had the best of seasons so far after being knocked out early from the Champions League and are fifth in the PL table. They will take on Bournemouth tonight in the quarter-final of the FA Cup in what could be their chance of progressing towards the only piece of silverware that Pep Guardiola could possibly win this season. With the future of aging midfielders like Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan looking uncertain, City's interest in top young midfielders around the world seems justified.
However, their aspirations to sign Pedri seem a little far-fetched as Barcelona have previously clarified their commitment to keeping this world-class midfielder at the club for a long time. Pedri has also voiced this out publicly on multiple occasions that he would like to stay and make history at FC Barcelona. His current contract, which runs till 2030, clarifies this commitment from both parties. The contract includes a release clause of 1 billion euro, making it unlikely for any club to sign the Canary Island midfielder in the near future.
Barcelona to take on Girona after just a 65-hour break in La Liga today
Barcelona will face Girona in a highly anticipated Catalan derby at the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys on March 30, 2025. Barcelona, currently leading the league with 63 points, are on an eight-game winning streak and remain unbeaten in 2025. Under Hansi Flick, the Blaugrana have been in scintillating form, with Robert Lewandowski and Lamine Yamal spearheading the attack.
However, the team has played their last match, less than 72 hours ago against Osasuna and will come off tired for this match. In light of this, Hansi Flick has made several changes to the starting line-up. Girona, sitting 13th with 34 points, have struggled in recent weeks, failing to win any of their last six matches. With missing key players such as Donny van de Beek (suspended) and Abel Ruiz (injured), Girona faces an uphill battle.
