Marcus Stoinis, who was  an integral part of Australia’s successful 2023 World Cup campaign, has called time on his ODI career. The 35-year-old’s abrupt decision has stunned cricket fans as the veteran is a part of Australia’s Champions Trophy 2025 squad that will tour Pakistan. Currently, Stoinis is serving Durban Super Giants in the ongoing SA20 League 2024-25. 

Stoinis’ retirement has raised eyebrows as he has become one of renowned cricketing icons to announce retirement from ODIs. He has expressed his desire to spend the latter stage of his career while playing T20 leagues. The right-handed player’s decision displays how T20 leagues have succeeded in attracting prominent names in this sport.

Announcing his retirement, Stoinis wrote, 

"Playing ODI cricket for Australia has been an incredible journey, and I’m grateful for every moment I’ve had in the green and gold," Stoinis said.

"Representing my country at the highest level is something I’ll always cherish.

"This wasn’t an easy decision, but I believe it’s the right time for me to step away from ODIs and fully focus on the next chapter of my career."

"I’ve got a fantastic relationship with Ron (Australia men's team coach Andrew McDonald) and I’ve hugely appreciated his support.

"I’ll be cheering the boys on in Pakistan."

Australia coach McDonald acknowledges Stoinis’ contribution

Australia coach Andrew McDonald, who is part Australia’s Sri Lanka assignment for ongoing two-match Test series has praised Stoinis for his efforts in ODI cricket.

Discussing Stoinis’ retirement, he said, "He is a natural leader, an exceptionally popular player and a great person.

The Australia coach also remarked, "He should be congratulated on his ODI career and all of his achievements."

Talking about Stoinis ODI numbers, he has racked up 1495 runs and 48 wickets in 71 matches while in T20Is, he has amassed 1245 runs and 45 wickets in 74 games.
