35-year-old Mexican driver Sergio Perez is presently looking into options for returning to Formula 1 in the season of 2026. Since leaving Red Bull Racing at the conclusion of the 2024 season, Perez has revealed that he is already in talks with several teams for a comeback. One of the leading teams that have shown interest is the new Cadillac F1 team, which will be on the grid from 2026. It has been reported that Perez is engaged in advanced discussions with Cadillac, with talks going well, but financial terms are yet to be agreed upon.
Perez has stated that his comeback depends on identifying a project that suits his dreams and provides a competitive setup. He said, "We are talking to a few parties out there. Once I know all my options, I will make a decision. What is very clear to me is that I'm only coming back if the project makes sense, and it's something I can enjoy." Meanwhile, Perez is stepping away from the sport for a six-month break to consider his options, spending time with his family and exploring several opportunities inside and outside of Formula 1 racing.
Turbulence amongst Red Bull’s driver lineup
Red Bull Racing has recently implemented significant changes to its driver lineup early in the 2025 Formula 1 season. After only two races, the team decided to replace New Zealand driver Liam Lawson with Japanese driver Yuki Tsunoda as Max Verstappen's teammate. This change was effective from the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka. Lawson faced challenges in the initial races of the 2025 season. In Australia, he qualified 18th and retired from the race after starting from the pit lane due to setup changes. In China, he qualified last and finished 16th in the Grand Prix.
Tsunoda, previously with Racing Bulls (formerly AlphaTauri), was promoted to the main Red Bull team. Team Principal Christian Horner expressed confidence in Tsunoda's experience, stating that it would aid in developing the RB21 car and achieving the team's goals for the season
