Mohammed Shami, who has been out of action for the better part of a year due to an ankle injury, has been picked in the list of probables for the upcoming 2024-25 domestic cricket season. The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) named their 31-member probable squad, which included their star fast bowler Mohammed Shami, who last played cricket during the ODI World Cup 2023.
Notably, Ajit Agarkar, the Indian chief selector, had talked about Mohammed Shami targeting a return to cricket during the Bangladesh Test series, starting from September 19. His comments came last month after Mohammed Shami started to bowl in the nets after his recovery from injury, following an ankle surgery.
But now, with the announcement of CAB, including Mohammed Shami for the upcoming 2024-25 season, which is going to begin in early October, he might not get picked in the Indian cricket team for the upcoming two-match Test series against Bangladesh. As per the report from ESPNcricinfo, the Indian fast bowler is going to continue training at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, aiming to make a comeback during India’s home season of cricket.
Mohammed Shami could return to cricket during New Zealand Test series in October
If Mohammed Shami is not going to be a part of the two-match Test series against Bangladesh, then he could feature in the Indian squad for the three-match Test series versus New Zealand from October 16 onwards. Most importantly, India will be needing the services of Mohammed Shami for the highly anticipated five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) Test series against Australia down under, starting on November 22.
All in all, the next couple of months will decide whether Mohammed Shami will be fully fit and ready to take part in the BGT for India, which could decide the fate of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 finalists.
