The Rohit Sharma-led Team India, who are currently taking part at the T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA and West Indies, are missing the services of their star pacer, Mohammed Shami. The Indian pacer, who has been out of action after the conclusion of the ODI World Cup 2023, finished as the highest wicket-taker.
Although, he was ruled out of the subsequent calendar with an injury he struggled during the course of the tournament. However, he underwent an Achilles tendon surgery in February, earlier this year, his return to the field was further extended. But according to recent reports, the 33-year-old is set to make his return in the upcoming home Test series against Bangladesh.
As per a report by News18, Shami has resumed bowling at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. It further adds that he is being monitored by head of Sports Science and Medicine, Dr Nitin Patel and Strength and Conditioning Coach Rajinikanth.
Md Shami’s childhood coach, Badruddin also opened up on the pacer’s return to competitive cricket. “Shami has started bowling. Not with full run-up or full tilt but has started releasing the ball without any discomfort in the nets. This is a good sign because bowling activity has begun,” he said.
Furthermore, a source close to Shami also confirmed that he will be back in action very soon, but full clarity will come when he bowls at full tilt. “No doubt he will be back in India colours very soon. You would have seen the progress he has been making via the social media videos and the post. He is working very hard but more clarity will come when bowling resumes at full tilt and how the body reacts after that,” he quoted.
Jay Shah hints on Shami’s availability
Earlier in March, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also had spoken on Md Shami’s return to cricket. Speaking to PTI, Jay Shah revealed that Shami will make his comeback in the home Test series against Bangladesh. “Shami’s surgery is done, he is back in India. Shami’s return is likely for the home series against Bangladesh,” he had said.
