During the highly prestigious IIFA Awards, one of the biggest Bollywood awards night s of the year, when actor Shah Rukh Khan was asked by Karan Johar about why he isn’t retiring from the movies, he likened himself with former Indian captain MS Dhoni, playfully stating that legends like us can say no to everyone, and before they know it, we have played 10 IPLs in a metaphorical sense. Notably, the moment happened while Karan Johar and Shah Rukh Khan were addressing the audience on the centre stage at the IIFA Awards where the Bollywood superstar remarked that he could retire just like MS Dhoni.

As the host of the latest instalment of the p IIFA Awards after more than 10 years, Shah Rukh Khan stole the show in front of some of the Bollywood greats along with thousands of fans in attendance in Abu Dhabi. When co-host Karan Johar, who was told to retire by SRK after his monologue on the topic, the director turned the question on him, to which the actor wittily stated that he and MSDh know how to keep everyone hooked to them until they decide to hang up their boots.

MS Dhoni and I are the same kind of legends: Shah Rukh Khan

In the viral video on the social media platform X, Shah Rukh Khan remarked, “One of the biggest things about legends, their hallmark is the ability to recognise when to stop, when to retire like the great Sachin Tendulkar, like Sunil Chhetri the footballer, like Roger Federer the great tennis star. They all know when to retire. Now, Karan, I think it’s time for you to consider retirement too.”

Karan Johar humorously countered him by asking, “By that standard, why don’t you retire?,” to which Shah Rukh Khan playfully replied, “Actually main dusre kisam ka legendary hu. Main aur (MS) Dhoni ek kisam ke legend hai. Na na karke bhi 10 IPLs khel jaate hai (Actually I am a different kind of legend. MS Dhoni and I are the same kind of legends. Despite saying no, we end up playing 10 seasons of IPL.)”

Moments later, actor Vicky Kaushal was heard saying, “Retirement is for legends, Kings are forever,” to a huge uproar from the crowd at the venue. Notably, the IIFA Awards concluded on a great note for MS Dhoni, who was given the the Best Actor award for Jawan, which he accepted after touching the feet of great director Mani Ratnam.
