India’s Golden Boy, Neeraj Chopra confirmed that India is bidding for the 2027 edition of the World Athletics Championships. 25-year-old Chopra recently became the world champion and scripted history by winning India’s first-ever gold medal at the prestigious tournament, with his massive throw of 88.17m. Set to participate in the Diamond League meet in Zurich, Chopra addressed the media a day before the meet and talked about India’s prospects in the World Championships.
The 2020 Tokyo Olympics champion talked about India’s potential to host global championships and confirmed that India is bidding for the upcoming edition of the tournament. According to PTI, Chopra said, “They are bidding. I will request them, and hopefully, they will come in great capacity.”
Talking about the growing popularity of athletics in India, Chopra said, “Now, javelin is famous in India. I have always said in Indian interviews that we need to understand athletics and be knowledgeable about it because athletics is not only javelin throw.”
The Khandra-born added, “There are so many events involved. So, if they don’t come, I will push them to come.” Chopra went on to say, “The Indian people are so supportive, and they are now following athletics and taking interest in athletics.” After a successful campaign in the Athletics Championships, Chopra will now be seen in action in the Zurich Diamond League on August 31, Thursday.
