Neeraj Chopra, the top-ranked javelin thrower in the world, will lead the Indian team at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest in 2023, which will get underway on August 19. When Neeraj Chopra surpassed the entry criterion of 85.20m at the Lausanne Diamond League with a throw of 89.08m, he had already qualified for the World Championships.


At the 2023 World Athletics Championships, each nation may send a maximum of three qualified athletes (or one qualified team in the case of relay teams) per event. There are also wild card entries, which are only permitted for current world champions and winners of specific highly important sports competitions from the previous year.


Indians who have qualified for World Athletics Championships 2023, include Neeraj Chopra (Men's javelin throw), Avinash Sable (Men's 3000m steeplechase), Jeswin Aldrin (Men's long jump), M Sreeshankar (Men's long jump), Praveen Chithravel (Men's triple jump), Tajinderpal Singh Toor (Men's shot put), Priyanka Goswami (Women's 20km race walk), Akshdeep Singh (Men's 20km race walk), Vikash Singh (Men's 20km race walk), Paramjeet Bisht (Men's 20km race walk), Ram Baboo (Men's 35km race walk.


Only two medals have been won by India at the World Athletics Championships. Last year in Eugene, Neeraj Chopra took home a silver in the javelin throw. Previously in 2003, Anju Bobby George took home a bronze medal in the women's long jump in Paris.
