On Sunday, December 17, the Indian bowling lineup inflicted a South African batting collapse at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg during the first ODI of the three-match series. Arshdeep Singh and Avesh Khan picked up five and four wickets respectively to reduce South Africa to 116 runs, which is the lowest-ever total for the Proteas on their home soil in ODI cricket. The Twitterati flooded social media with humorous reactions to South Africa's batting collapse against India.
For the unversed, Arshdeep Singh started the carnage in the first over of his spell, taking the wickets of Reeza Hendricks and Rassie van der Dussen on back-to-back deliveries with both batters not troubling the scorers. Before the end of the first powerplay, the left-arm fast bowler sent Tony de Zorzi and Heinrich Klaasen with South Africa score reading 52/4 in 10 overs.
Avesh Khan, who was introduced to the Indian bowling attack as the first change bowler, dismissed Aiden Markram and Wiaan Mulder on consecutive balls at the start of the 11th over to put the visitors in a formidable position. Shortly after, he also scalped for David Miller and Keshav Maharaj, putting South Africa out of the contest at eight wickets down for 73 runs.
