The Australian Open 2023 is already underway in Australia. On the opening day of the first Grand Slam of the season, the tournament organizers were dealt with a major blow as World No. 21 Nick Kyrgios pulled out of the tournament. The Australian tennis player made the announcement to the media at the Melbourne Park on Monday.
The 27-year-old said that he will be undergoing a knee surgery which has thus ruled him out of his home Grand Slam. The World No. 21 explained that he has a parameniscal cyst growing which is the result of the small tear in his left meniscus.
“(This is) one of the most important tournaments of my career. Hasn’t been easy at all,” Kyrgios said. “I’m extremely disappointed” he further stated.
This will be the first time Kyrgios is missing the Australian Open since making his debut at his home major in 2014. The 27-year-old also shared the picture on his Instagram story after his procedure at home.
