Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic made a stunning comeback from two-set deficit in the third round of US Open 2023 and took down compatriot Laslo Djere. With this win, Djokovic didn’t only manage to make it to the next round of the tournament but also avoided what would have been his earliest exit in the tournament since 2006.
The world number 2 player, who will face Croatia’s 25-year-old in the next round of the tournament, defeated Djere 4-6, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1, 6-3. After his win over the 28-year-old, the 23-time Grand Slam winner said, "Of course, winning a match is always better than losing a match. It's as simple as that.”
Djokovic added, "I think the message is sent to the rest of the field that I'm still able to play five sets deep at night, and coming from two sets down always sends a strong message to the future opponents. But at the same time, I'm not really wanting to be in this position, to be honest. I prefer a straight-set win. So hopefully I can get back on that track in the next match."
Djokovic, who stands behind Carlos Alcaraz in the rankings, is expected to square off against the Wimbledon 2023 winner on September 10. This would be Djere’s biggest win of the tournament, in case he managed to win the game against Djokovic.
