On Wednesday, June 19, Team Serbia confirmed that former World No. 1 tennis player, Novak Djokovic will feature at the 2024 Paris Olympics, set to be played in July-August. The Olympic Committee of Serbia confirmed that update via a statement on their website.
This decision by the Olympic Committee of Serbia comes after the 24-time Grand Slam champion has consistently expressed his strong desire to participate at the Summer Games. “Novak Djokovic and Dusan Lajovic have fulfilled the conditions according to ATP ranking and confirmed their participation at the Summer Olympic Games in Paris 2024,” the Serbian committee in their statement said.
It is to be noted that Djokovic has participated in four Olympic tournaments so far, securing a bronze medal finish at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. This decision from the Serbian committee comes after the 37-year-old was forced to withdraw from the French Open 2024 just ahead of his quarterfinal match against Casper Ruud because of a torn medial meniscus in his right knee.
My love for this sport is strong and the desire to compete…: Novak Djokovic
A week earlier, the Serb took to social media to confirm his progress after some “tough” days. In a post on his official Instagram handle, Novak Djokovic said, “In the past day, I had to make some tough decisions after sustaining a meniscus tear during my last match. I’m still processing it all but I am happy to update you that the surgery went well. I am so appreciative of the team of doctors who have been by my side, as well as the overwhelming support I have received from the fans.”
“I’m going to do my best to be healthy and fit to return to the court as soon as possible. My love for this sport is strong and the desire to compete at the highest level is what keeps me going. Idemoo 💪💪” he added. The 37-year-old also shared a video later on, where he can be seen training hard to get back to the court with the caption reading “Progress.”
