Five-time champions, Australia are taking on Afghanistan in Match 39 of the ODI World Cup 2023. The Hashmatullah Shahidi-led side are coming into the game after beating the Netherlands at the Ekana Cricket Stadium by seven wickets, the Aussies beat reigning champions, England in their last match. However, in this match, both the sides will fight for a position in the semifinals of the tournament.

Just minutes before the teams took the field, Australia captain Pat Cummins at the toss confirmed that Steve Smith will miss the match against the Afghans. Although, Cummins did not elaborate much on Smith exclusion, he just added that the batter has been struggling in the warm-ups.

However, the Australian media took to X to update on Smith’s lingering vertigo symptoms. On the eve of the match, Steve Smith revealed that he had symptoms of vertigo, which worsened as he trained. “I’ve had a bit of vertigo stuff for the last day or so. It’s a bit annoying. Hopefully I can get through training and I’m all good. But it’s not a nice place to be,” he told reporters.

Apart from Smith, Cameroon Green was also dropped, with the Pat Cummins-led side calling in Mitchell Marsh and Glenn Maxwell.
