Indian fans flooded social media with emotional messages and memes as India registered their first-ever Test series defeat at home in 12 years. Notably, India hosted New Zealand for a three-match Test series, which began on October 16. After losing the first game of the series by a margin of eight wickets, Rohit Sharma-led side lost the second game in Pune by a huge margin of 113 runs. Earlier by beating the hosts in the first Test, New Zealand put an end to their 36-year-long losing streak and recorded their first Test win over India since 1988 on Indian soil.
With the second loss, the two-time WTC finalists ended their long streak that lasted for 18 bilateral series in a row. By the time of the tea break on Day 3, the hosts needed 181 more runs to win the game and take the series to a momentum. While Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja built a crucial 39-run stand to delay the loss, it didn’t prove enough. Yashasvi Jaiswal remained the highest scorer for India with his 77 for 65 with a combination of nine boundaries and three maximums. Rohit Sharma and Co. were bundled out on 245 and fell short of 113 runs.
