On Sunday, August 25, Bangladesh made history by defeating Pakistan for the first-time ever in Test cricket, at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. The fifth and final day’s play came to a close after Bangladesh chased down a paltry target of 30 runs with 10 wickets in hand, to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match Test series.
Notably, this was the 14th Test match between Pakistan and Bangladesh, with the first one dating back to 2001. With their historic first Test win over Pakistan, Bangladesh have now improved their record against them to 1-12, with one other match ending in a draw.
After electing to field first on day one of the first Test, Bangladesh fast bowlers had a good start, but then, Mohammad Rizwan and Saud Shakeel scored hundreds, to push Pakistan’s first innings score to 448/6 declared.
In response, Bangladesh were quite exceptional with the bat, with their experienced batter Mushfiqur Rahim scoring a 191, while three other batters got fifties, to propel their first innings score to 565. With that, the visitors took a vital first innings lead of 117 runs before the close of play on day four.
Pakistan came into day five with a wicket down before their batting capitulated in front of some exceptional spin bowling from Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Shakib Al Hasan. After getting bundled out for 146 in just 55.5 overs, Pakistan had no hope left to resurrect the situation.
Zakir Hasan and Shadman Islam took just 6.3 overs to chase down the 30-run target, to secure the first Test win for Bangladesh against Pakistan in cricket history.
