On Wednesday, August 7, India’s Antim Panghal lost her Round of 16 clash against Zeynep Yetgil of Turkey by 0-10 margin on technical superiority at the Paris Olympics 2024. The highly accomplished wrestler and two-time Junior World Championships winner, went down in minutes to bow out of the quadrennial Games, giving another shock exit after Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification.
The 19-year-old Indian was outclassed in her opening bout of women’s 53kg freestyle in less than two minutes after Yetgil went on for the attack straight from the start, taking a four-point early lead. However, the Indian tried to get into the game with her defense but it just turned lured into the Turkish’s trap, getting her more points, before being dragged her on the mat for a clean sweep.
The Indian grappler still has a chance of competing in the repechage round, only if Zeynep Yetgil makes to the final of women’s 53kg. It is to be noted that the 19-year-old earned India’s first quota from the 2023 World Wrestling Championships. She even scripted history by becoming the first Indian to win the U-10 World Wrestling Championships and successfully retain the title.
