Pat Cummins, the Australian Test and ODI captain, is likely to play some domestic cricket before taking part in the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) Test series against India, starting November 22, 2024. The 31-year-old spoke about playing some One-Day cricket or Sheffield Shield matches for New South Wales in the upcoming Australian summer.
Notably, New South Wales are slated to play four Sheffield Shield matches in the 2024-25 season before Australia kick-starts their five-match Test series against India. Pat Cummins spoke about getting back to cricket in late October or early November, which means he might be available to play for New South Wales against Queensland at the Sydney Cricket Ground from November 1 onwards.
But, since this First-Class match is scheduled to clash with the first ODI between Australia and Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on November 4, it isn’t certain that Pat Cummins will take part in it ahead of the international commitment. The clarity on the situation is expected to come as Australia inches closer to its summer of cricket in the 2024-25 season.
I imagine kind of late October/early November will be when I start playing: Pat Cummins
While talking to News Corp, Pat Cummins was quoted as saying, “Ronnie [Australian coach Andrew McDonald] called me the other day and said we need to talk about this [his build-up to the Test summer].”
“I prefer to go a little bit fresher but definitely play some cricket going in. So I'd say it's either two or three ODIs, plus a Shield [game] or maybe just some Shield, maybe some NSW one-day stuff. I imagine kind of late October/early November will be when I start playing, building up for the Tests,” he added.
Moreover, Pat Cummins last played a four-day domestic cricket match way back in 2021.
