The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has reportedly decided to sack players from their central contracts after the side got knocked out from the T20 World Cup 2024 in the group stage. The PCB has undergone several major changes in recent months and after three Chairmen have been replaced, the governing body has decided to sack players from central contracts after their below-par performance in the tournament. Notably, the former champions crashed out of the T20 World Cup 2024 after facing defeats from debutants USA and former champions India.
According to the reports by PTI, the Mohsin Khan-led body has planned to terminate the contracts of the players who didn’t perform well this season. A PCB source was quoted by NDTV as saying, “The board is likely to return to the old system of having a chief selector with two or three selectors and the captain and head coach not sitting in selection meetings with the selectors.”
He added, “Most likely players, who have central contracts, will be demoted or even dropped because of poor performances and other perks awarded to the players will be looked into.” The reports further stated that Wahab Riaz is likely to be a part of the new setup as well and might be Pakistan’s new Chief Selector. However, official confirmations are awaited. Notably, Wahab was the Chief Selector before the old system of having a three or four-member national selection committee was demolished.
As per the new system, captain and head coach Babar Azam and Gary Kirsten had selection powers. They had a data analyst and former cricketers for advice and help to select the team. Several names including former cricketers Riaz, Mohammad Yousuf, and Abdul Razzaq were there in the panel.
