In a big announcement, the Premier League stated that they will have two transfer windows in the upcoming summer, which will allow Manchester City and Chelsea to sign players before the start of the FIFA Club World Cup 2025. The transfer window for the Premier League clubs is set to open on June 1 this year before it closes on June 10, and following that, it will run again from June 16 to September 1, to ensure that the two participants of the Club World Cup can bolster their squads for the tournament.
Notably, FIFA expanded the Club World Cup to 32 teams for the upcoming 2025 edition, which will be played in the USA, adopting the format of the World Cup over the past few decades. The tournament is set to begin on June 14, wherein 32 teams are divided into eight groups of four teams each, vying for a place in the coveted final, which will go down at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 13.
Premier League can have only 12 weeks of the summer transfer window out of 16 weeks in a calendar year
The decision around two summer transfer windows was taken by the Premier League after FIFA approved an additional window from June 1 to 10, to give teams the chance to make additions to their squads for the Club World Cup. Since the Premier League can have only 12 weeks of the summer transfer window out of 16 weeks in a calendar year, the other four weeks dedicated to the winter transfer window, the five-day break in between was stipulated, to ensure it runs from June 1 until September 1.
In recent years, the transfer window in the summer in the Premier League generally began in the middle of the month of June before running through till the end of August and the start of September. But with FIFA approving an additional window of 10 days at the start of June, the Premier League had to find a middle ground, to keep the system going in regards to allowing the teams to sign players in the summer within a stipulated time frame.
