American tennis player Reilly Opelka has divulged that he paid a massive fine of $80000 in the 2025 BNP Paribas Open, held at the Indian Wells from March 5 to 16. Opelka’s revelation came following his victory against Denmark’s Holger Rune in the second round of the ongoing 2025 Miami Open. During the game, the Danish player also made a complaint similar to Opelka, who made one regarding in his previous tournament held at Indian Wells. Following the victory against his Danish counterpart, Opelka was asked about his views regarding Rune’s grievance to the umpire, claiming obstruction due to lights turning on abruptly.

Opelka termed Rune’s complaint valid and also disclosed the incident he faced during Indian Wells. The 27-year-old received the punishment for a similar complaint during his first-round defeat at the hands of Roman Sullifan at the 2025 BNP Paribas Open. “I don’t know. It was valid. If the lights bug him, they bug him. I don’t think he’s making anything up. He played within the rules to do the video review. There was no foul play on his side," said Opelka.

If that were me I probably would’ve been fined another 80 G’s: Opleka

Opelka added had he made the similar complaint again, he would’ve faced another fine of 80 grands. "If that were me I probably would’ve been fined another 80 G’s like I did last week at Indian Wells . They couldn’t figure out how to turn on the lights. I asked for them. And then boom, I got slapped with a nice fine. So I’m playing for free this week," remarked Opelka.

After 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5) win against Rune in Miami, Opelka will now next be seen against Czech’s Tomas Machac on March 24. Machac has been in fabulous touch recently as he won his maiden ATP tour-level title earlier this month with his success at the Mexican Open 2025.
