The Indian cricket team is currently excelling in all three formats of the game. While they are the top team in T20Is, India are ranked second and third, respectively in Tests and ODIs. The team is undergoing a transition phase and has been doing well since the 2021 T20 World Cup where they failed to qualify for the knockout stage. Rohit Sharma has done a tremendous job as a captain so far.
However, due to workload management and injury concerns, the selectors have had to try as many as six captains across formats after Virat Kohli stepped down from his position. Although there have been unavoidable circumstances that have led to such chopping and changing, India is still in need of Rohit Sharma’s successor.

Sharma is 35 years of age now and he can’t lead India forever. Also, with the current captain frequently injured, the selectors need to groom someone who can lead India in all three formats once Rohit decides to step down. Former India selector Saba Karim has come up with two names that can be considered. Karim has named KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant as the two possible successors of Rohit Sharma.
"Very early days! I feel it is up to the selectors to first figure out whether they want to have one player as an all-format captain and if that is the case then you are left with multiple options. Number one is KL Rahul because he plays all three formats. Number 2, hot on his heels is Rishabh Pant who has been exceptional in the past couple of seasons," said Karim on Sports 18's daily show 'Sports Over the Top'.
"Now he has grown into an excellent white ball player as well. So, you are left with these two options. But there are so many other things to consider. Number one is for how long Rohit Sharma can continue given his injury woes. So, these things also have to be kept in mind.
Are you looking at a young leader? If that is the case, then let us get Rishabh Pant in because he is another player who will play all three formats in years to come. So, these are the choices which that the selectors have to deal with," he added.
