Poland captain Robert Lewandowski is set to miss their 2024 European Championship opener after suffering a torn bicep femoris muscle. The Polish striker will remain out from the team that will take on the Netherlands on June 16. The 35-year-old suffered the injury during his side’s friendly against Turkey, where they Poland registered a 2-1 win over the rivals.
After the Netherlands, Poland will take on Austria on June 21 and France on June 25. In the friendly against Turkey, Lewandowski was substituted after just 33 minutes in what was his 150th international appearance as Poland played their final warm-up game before the commencement of Euro 2024. The Polish football federation’s doctor said in a statement, "We are doing everything so that Robert can play in the second match against Austria.”
An official statement announced captain’s injury and said, "Lewandowski suffered a rupture of the biceps femoris muscle, which will exclude him from the first match of the tournament.” After the friendly against Turkey, Poland coach Michal Probierz said that he was being optimistic about Lewandoski’s injury and “there shouldn’t be a problem”.
Other than him, Hellas attacker Karol Swiderski sustained an ankle injury while celebrating the opening goal against Turkey. Not only this, but Swiderski’s club team-mate and defender Pawel Dawidowicz suffered a strain in his quadriceps.
