The Men in Blue are all set to play against Sri Lanka to begin things in the new year. After the sides tour of Bangladesh ends on December 26, 2022, the Rohit Sharma side will take on Sri Lanka in a home series. The two neighbouring countries will lock horns in a three-match T20I series, starting January 3, 2023. While the first match of the series is set to be played in Mumbai, the second and third T20I will take place in Pune (January 5) and Rajkot (January 7), respectively.

But ahead of this series, a big update from the hosts have emerged. The Men in Blue skipper Rohit Sharma is set to miss the three-match series after the 35-year-old sustained a thumb injury in the second ODI against Bangladesh. Rohit Sharma, who injured his thumb while collecting a catch in the second ODI of the series, has failed to regain fitness and was later ruled out of the remainder of the series.

It is being reported that Rohit’s return might take some time to heal and Hardik Pandya, who led the team against New Zealand in the T20I series recently might take the charge as the skipper.

Earlier there were reports of BCCI going for split captaincy in 2023. India all-rounder Hardik Pandya was being speculated to take over the captaincy in the shortest format of the game after India’s exit from the T20 World Cup 2022. However, a BCCI official later told PTI that there was no discussion on the India’s T20 captaincy in Apex Council meeting.

“The matter wasn’t even on the Apex Council Agenda and it wasn’t discussed on the forum. Only selection committee can take a call on captaincy,” the BCCI official privy was quoted.
