India’s preparations for the upcoming T20 World Cup are in full flow. The Men in Blue will be playing plenty of games before the mega event in October. This will allow the selectors to get a better idea of whom to keep in the squad. However, there is already a core of players who are certain to fly to Australia in October.
Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, and Jasprit Bumrah look like certain names. But there are still a lot of spots left to fill in and the selectors will be keeping a close eye on all the upcoming bilateral series and T20Is to fill those empty slots. A few names are being tossed up by cricket experts who can be included in the squad for the biennial event.
Ravi Shastri has come up with Sanju Samson’s name for the T20 World Cup squad. The former India coach thinks Samson is more suited than anyone to play in the Australian conditions as the batter loves to play on bouncy pitches. While discussing the possible T20 World Cup squad on a show on ESPNCricinfo, Shastri tossed up Samson’s name and backed it with some solid statements.
The former coach says Sanju Samson has got more range of shots for Australian conditions that any other Indian batter. “For Australia, when you look at the conditions; bounce, pace, cut, pull; Samson will always threaten. There is not much movement there (on Australian pitches) and he likes the ball coming on to the bat. So, for those conditions, he has the shots more than any Indian, to be honest,” said Ravi Shastri.
Notably, Sanju Samson had a really good IPL 2022. Captaining Rajasthan Royals, Samson scored 458 runs in 17 matches at 28.63. He played with a strike rate of 135.72 in the tournament. However, the Kerala batter failed to find a place in India’s squad for the T20I series against South Africa.
