Sanju Samson, the captain of Rajasthan Royals (RR), has made the trip to the Centre of Excellence (CoE) of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in Bengaluru on Monday, March 31, to get clearance to keep wickets in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 matches. After being given partial clearance to play for IPL 2025 for RR, not allowed to assume wicketkeeping duties due to finger injury, he has temporarily given up the captaincy to Riyan Parag.
Notably, after suffering an injury on his right index finger in February, for which he underwent surgery, Sanju Samson got fit enough to bat for RR in the IPL 2025, but he has been either used as or replaced with an impact player because of non-clearance to keep wickets. Following the conclusion of the third match in the ongoing IPL season for RR, which they won by six runs against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) last night in Guwahati, Samson has made his way to the CoE in Bengaluru to get full clearance on his finger injury.
Sanju Samson is expected to be back as skipper from the RR's next match, which is nearly a week away: Sources
As per the report published in Cricbuzz, Sanju Samson is set to undergo testing on his right index finger at the Sport Science wing of the CoE, and with that, get final approval to not only keep wickets, but also take over the responsibility of the RR captaincy in the IPL 2025 season from Riyan Parag. In the first three matches of the league, without the leadership of Samson on the field, the Royals have managed to win only once in the league.
The sources privy to the recent development have stated that Sanju Samson’s finger has healed fully, and with that, he is looking to start wicketkeeping for RR in the remaining matches of the ongoing IPL 2025 season. “He will seek clearance to do so for the remaining games and is expected to be back as skipper from the RR's next match, which is nearly a week away,” a source stated.
Moreover, the upcoming match in the IPL 2025 for RR is slated to happen against Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur.
